1950s Movie Trailers

Here's a showreel of monster movie trailers from the '50s.
From these clips I can take aspects of them to add to my animation, gaining that same '50s horror style.
Such as;
-Black & White
-Grainy picture from the old film.
-The 'over-the-top' type (font style and actual content) displayed before the introduction of the film's name.
-The tension building brass-band music.
-The transitions of each piece of type when coming onto/off the screen.
-The sound effects of ray-guns, monsters, false car tyre squeals. Mostly badly dubbed.
-The one-liners of the terrified public.
- The narrated speech which sometimes follows the on-screen type, usually a deep male voice filled with seriousness.

The Cosmic Monsters
The titles in this trailer are animated accordingly to their meaning, emphasizing them. Also the eerie background adds to the frightfulness of the film.

Big Active

Here is the showreel of design firm 'Big Active'. They specialise in motion graphics and have created some iconic sequences. I particularly like the BBC Radio clip within this showreel; showing a hand-generated/scribbled effect, which can make the viewers eye follow every move and focus on one part of the screen, like a trail of animation.

3D Type - MoreVision

More Vision is a design company ran by Andrew Morev which deals solely with motion graphics. Based in the UK, More Vision is one of the biggest names in 3D type design, his work has seen the cover of Computer Arts and used across the web. Seeing his work got me interested in 3D type and has spurred me on to experiment with it myself.

PYSOP

Psyop are another motion based design firm. They are based in America but have worked with clients all over the world. These include; Coca-Cola, O2, Fox, Michelin, Renault, Mtv and Ubisoft. They are experts at animation and seeing some of their work has made me question whether to follow the print based typography route in design or infact want to do both print and digital work.

Here's a downloadable program which lets you create your own pixellated avatars and annimate them in set environments. The website has great pixel animations too.
